The Attentive Heart: Conversations With Trees
Published in Hardcover by Fawcett Books (July, 1993)
Average review score:

If you care about connecting with nature, read this book!I was thrilled to find this book at my local public library. The more I read, however, the more I wished to own a copy myself so that I could refer to it again and again.
Honest, BeautifulI would rate the spiritual factor of this book at least a 10. The world would be a better place if all of us could revere trees in the way of Stephanie Kaza. The stories are rich, honest, and full of love. The illustrations are beautiful, free, and alive. The only thing I didn't care for in the book was the extremely Buddhist perspective; I found it structured & confining. Still, a very beautiful and moving book--Particularly, the chapters on the Coastal Redwoods and Bristlecone Pines. As a tree artist and hardcore druid-at-heart (especially when it comes to redwoods), I very much enjoyed it. I appreciate a book which provides such utter spiritual reverance and love (which we have often towards animals), to trees!.

Australian Food: In Celebration of the New Australian Cuisine
Published in Paperback by Ten Speed Press (August, 1999)
Average review score:

Wide range of recipes and difficultyThis is an excellent cookbook, providing a wide range of recipes with varied levels of difficulties ranging from the simple to the difficult. I've tried a few of the more complex ones with great success. There are some terms which might be a bit unfamiliar, but otherwise, a very nice cookbook. I highly recommend the naked raviolis with spinach.
An Perfect cook bookThis is one of the nicest cook books i have ever seen, great pictures and recepies by the top chefs of the Australian cuisine. I am in the restaurant business and we can use most of the recepies very well. Thanks again.

Away All Boats (Classics of Naval Literature)
Published in Hardcover by United States Naval Inst. (March, 1996)
Average review score:

A SurpriseExcellent military fiction! I picked up this book (1954 edition) at a public library free offering three years ago and just now starting reading it. Surprisingly well done, and reminiscent a bit of the Seafort saga and The Big 'E'
Excellent novel dealing with Naval amphbious warfareDodson's 'Away All Boats' is a novel that is both a study of human nature and the art of command. The central theme is the ship and it's missions. The charecters of the crew bring this mass of steel to life and give it personality. There are strong charecters amongst the officers as well as the Sailors. Likewise there are officers and Sailors that one would cross the street to avoid. they are all thrust into the confines of theat attack transport Belinda and give the story so much of it's richness. The captain is a driven man and his goal is to make his ship the best attack transport in the Pacific Fleet. HIs drive whittles down the rough edges and shows up the weak leaders and followers. He makes few friends but ultimately gains the respect of many. This book is an excellent leadership text and would aid many, in the military as well as the civilian world, as they work with what they have been given and turn their people into a cohesive whole. This is a masculine book; women appear only in letters. It is a monastic existence as the men serve the Gods of War and now that the bulk of U. S. Naval ships are crewed by men and women, it is a reflection on an era that is rapidly slipping into the realm of memories.

Backcountry Adventures: Northern California
Published in Paperback by Swagman Publishing, Inc. (20 August, 2002)

Absolutley FABULOUS!WOW this was really helpful for giving us something fun to do with the new Jeep Rubicon. Ratings are a great guide. Mostly the trails are pretty sedate - but there are are quite a few hard ones listed to keep the rest of us happy. The history of the area is also interesting. The GPS coordinates are a huge bonus, better than wandering around wondering if you are allowed to be on this trail or not. Definately recommend - it worth the money in savings on wasted fuel - and driver/navigator harmony ;-)
Best Guidebook...Hands Down!We were wondering if the book could be worth it but we thought we'd give it a try. WOW! This book has everything, I mean EVERYTHING you could want to know as you explore the state (directions, lots of photos, interesting history, info about animals and plants w/pics, rating systems, and GPS coordinates)!!
Love this book. I hope that I can collect the rest of the titles about the other states. My book was fun to take along on the vacation drive but I could see just sitting and reading through it at home!

Backpacking Oregon
Published in Paperback by Wilderness Press (December, 1999)
Average review score:

Good book for backpackersThis book is great for backpackers. Warning: it is not a how-to manual for novices, but rather a guide for experienced backpackers. It offers a wide range of backpacking trips thoughout Oregon. The author rates each trip based on difficulty, solitude, and beauty, and highlights any special advantages or drawbacks to each trip. I was excited to read so many suggestions for varied new backpacking trips (and I have been backpacking in this state for 15 years!) His ratings are absolutely correct for the trips I have gone on.
Serious Backpackers Only!If you are looking for a REAL backpacking trip guide - not daytrips - this is the best book I have seen for the diverse state of Oregon. It's unique organization style is by season, the perfect way to choose a trip in an area of widely varying climates. It gives excellent, detailed descriptions of 27 different trips, including elevation gains, difficulty, scenery, solitude and side trips. This is not a book for novices, no "how to's" here, just great trip analyses. Includes great maps and B/W pictures. Enjoy!

Backpacking Washington
Published in Paperback by Wilderness Press (June, 2003)
Average review score:

wonderful guideDoug Lorain has done a wonderful job with this book. I've hiked extensively throughout Washington, and still found this book inspirational. All of the trips described in the book are lengthy backpacking trips. A wonderful job was done linking trails together, providing great, detailed, honest assessments of the route/terrain/difficulty of each trip. Best of all, the book is a joy to read (high praise for a guidebook). Even when not planning a trip, you'll enjoy thumbing through it, dreaming of future trips. A must have for anyone who wants to plan a great backpacking trip in Washington - period.
A rare bookDougls Lorain has gone out of his way to be sure backcountry travelers make the most of their time. From avoiding the less than scenic parts of the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail), to providing clues for off-trail/cross country opportunities, it will be difficult to go wrong with the candid advice from Lorain. Like Rick Steves has done for adventure minded European travelers, Doug Lorain provides more than most backpacking/trail book authors. An excellent book for GORP eaters who may be ready to enjoy the backcountry thru the backdoor.

Baja on the Fly
Published in Paperback by Frank Amato Pubns (December, 1997)
Average review score:

A great book!Definately one of the better books on fishing Baja. Well worth getting!
Great book for those who fish or want to fish Baja CA.This is a really good book that describes what places to go and what to use for specific species. Has a nice layout of knots, and gives pointers on the various popular types of fly tackle used there. Could have included more fly patterns, but being a Baja fisherman myself, it wasn't a setback.

Beaches of Kaua'I and Ni'Ihau (A Kolowalu Book)
Published in Paperback by University of Hawaii Press (April, 1990)
Average review score:

SuperbThus book was a labor of love. With years of experience as a lifeguard and surfer, John's curiousity went beyond. He studied oceanography, read all he could, and interviewed all those who knew anything about each beach. The result is the best source of information that will ever be available about Hawaiian beaches.

In depth info on practically every beach on MauiI used this book when doing research for a web site during our one year stay on Maui. It's awesome! The in-depth info on every beach on the island is up-to-date and insightful, with tid-bits of info only locals know, including history, geography, what's offshore, and more!

Best Bike Rides in the Pacific Northwest, 2nd
Published in Paperback by Globe Pequot Pr (March, 1996)
Average review score:

Very good ride planning guideWhile there are several multi-day trips in the guide, this book is targeted at the more serious recreational rider who is looking for day rides of 25 to 60 miles. It covers quite a large area, mostly in Washington State, with general and detailed descriptions of the routes, augmented by line maps. One nice feature is that it details the vertical profile of each ride so you can see what you're getting into when it comes to climbing hills at various milage points in the rides.
I've ridden about 1/3 of the routes and have found the rides well planned and accurately described. There is always a place to stop for a break near mid-way, and often alternatives to shorten or lengthen the trip. A great book to get you in touch with quiet roads or bike trails that you otherwise may never discover.
Identifies great week long bicycle tours in the NorthwestGood reference of some of the favorite multi-day bicycle tours in the Northwest.
